For those having trouble getting Intel Brookdale G [82845G/GL] and similar chipsets to work on Ubuntu 10.04, I have good news. The Ubuntu Wiki has
a page containing workarounds and fixes for the issue. My preferred choice right now is to install the backported Maverick kernel. This is also good news, because Ubuntu 10.10 should be expected to work on these machines without adjustment. Of course, if you just want the system to work with basic office-style functionality, VESA mode is a good alternative, but it will disable accelerated video.
